I.S.Johar puts it very well - "bhagwan hai ya nahi, yeh behes hee jaroot hai, behtar yehi hai ki manlo hai, kiyon ki agar baad me pata chala bhi ki nahi hai toh apna bigdta hee kya hai, magar ab jo kaha ke nahi chai, aur kahia baad me nikal aya toh phir toh beda gark karke hi chhodega bada zaalim a admi hai!" A man is battered very badly in life; his parents are killed in partition riots, brother dies due to the priest's callousness, sister commits suicide due to prostitution and he is the same man who is falsely convicted in crime and sent to jail. A man like him will only become an atheist. Ajit is this man who hates god and people who love god. He turns anti social mocking people's belief of social stigma, untouchability, self pity etc. He also becomes revengeful and will go to any distance to hunt down the man who was responsible for his misery. During his search he comes across the beautiful Rama who not only respects his ideas but also falls in love with him and considers him 'devata'. Co-incidentally, she is the daughter to the religious head(the mahant) whom he was searching for. Ajit tries to kill him twice but fails every time. But he does not let go of the culprit. He decides to use Rama against him. Ajit emotionally blackmails Rama and under pressure she marries him in a temple. They also spend a night together, as a part of his plan. On the other hand the mahant had fixed his daughter's marriage with Vinod, the so called upper caste guy who was responsible for getting Ajit's sister to prostitution and runs various other illegal business. Ajit wants to teach him a lesson. But Rama finds out about the true intentions of Ajit, and decides to end her life than living like this. Moreover, she realises that she is pregnant now and is completely shattered. Destiny brings Ajit and Rama and their son together on and off but God had his own way to bring Ajit on his path. The film is beautified by lovely songs and interesting situations. A must watch for all the non-believers and believers in God.
