A small park area at Sasebo Navy Base has been set aside as a dedicated monument park to the US Marines who were stationed at Sasebo from 1945 to 1998.
I was stationed there as the Marine Barracks Security Detachment NCOIC from 1988 to 1992. Many of the components of this park were part of the Det's dedicated flagpole mount where Marines conducted morning and evening colors daily from 1988 to 1998.
The monuments and plaques are in poor condition now and need to be cleaned and refreshed. I intend to make that a mission in the next few months.
