People are being asked not to share footage of two Gardaí being “viciously assaulted” outside a pub in Ballyfermot last night.
The officers, a man and a woman, were attacked after responding to a public order incident outside the pub on the Ballyfermot Road at around 12:45am this morning.
They were taken by ambulance to St James’s Hospital.
The man remains in hospital this morning, while the woman has been discharged.
Assault
In a statement, Assistant Commissioner Angela Willis said: “My thoughts this morning are with our two colleagues from Ballyfermot who were viciously assaulted last night whilst going about their normal duties, protecting communities in the Ballyfermot area.”
“I absolutely condemn the actions of the individuals involved in this serious incident and wish the members that were injured a full and speedy recovery,” she said.
The Gardaí were able to call for assistance during the attack, with reinforcements arriving a short time later.
Two men, one in his 50s and one in his 30s, were arrested at the scene on suspicion of assault.
A woman in her 50s was arrested on suspicion of public order offences.
"Totally unacceptable"
Local councillor Daithí Doolan said the attack was “totally unacceptable”.
“A number of Gardaí were attacked on Ballyfermot Road last night,” he said. “It was a vicious attack.”
“It’s totally unacceptable that people have to face this level of violence for simply going about doing their job.
“I think it shows the level of work that we need to do together – public representatives, community leaders and the Gardaí to work together to keep our streets safe for everybody going about their normal business.”
A full investigation is underway and Gardai are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident or has footage to contact them.
Gardaí are urging the public not to share the footage any further on social media.
