Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question...
Q: I really like those jazz-funk sounds by guys like, "Jeff Beck," "Grant Green," and also, "Larry Carlton." They all have unique ways of playing it, but there is this connection to the sound of jazz-funk. This music style seems pretty heavy with the jazzy dominant chords, and I love it! But, I just don't exactly get how to play guitar in this style. Any help with writing in this sound would be hugely appreciated!
George -- London, England
A: The playing styles of a Jeff Beck compared to a Larry Carlton are certainly different. Jeff Beck has that obvious gutsy blues-orientated attitude, and Larry Carlton has that smooth /calm - jazzy influence. However, overall they're both certainly masters of the jazzy-funk blend and of composing modal melodies with very well-conceived overdubbed guitar layering. So, in discussing the overall approach of this style we'll need to look at a number of elements such as; the dedicated Mixolydian mode use, the funky & driving rhythmic phrasing, (that these players use), as well as, important songwriting concepts, such as; the General Form of these types of song arrangements, and the guitar's application from; dynamics and techniques, to song sections that are left open for improvisation. In the video I cover some chart analysis to discuss the common; Form, Layout & the Harmonies of a typical jazz-funk song and I also show several examples on the fretboard as well. Enjoy!
