'The Guest House' is a poem by the 13th century (Persian) poet Rumi.
The core theme of this poem is Mindfulness and the belief that if we accept and welcome in every thought, both positive and negative, we can more easily find peace. 'The Guest House' is used by many Mindfulness tutors because it explains the concept so beautifully and in a way that students can understand and grasp. Students are sometimes encouraged to recite lines from the poem, almost like a mantra.
When we battle with uncomfortable, unwelcome thoughts, we give them more power and enable them to grow. But if we accept these thoughts - welcome them in and allow them to hang around for a while - this is when they lose their power over us.
Rumi compares our unwanted thoughts to unwanted visitors to our house, who make us feel uncomfortable. He explains that if we allow the guests to stick around for a while rather than ask them to leave, we might unexpectedly end up learning something very important from them.
