France has moved quickly to demand answers from the United States over spying allegations.
Le Monde newspaper reported the US monitored and tapped more than 70.3 million pieces of French telephone data between 10 December, 2012, and 8 January, 2013.
French foreign minister Laurent Fabius said: "I have immediately summoned the U.S. ambassador and he will be received this morning at the Quai d'Orsay (the French Foreign Ministry).
France's interior minister Manuel Valls told Europe 1 radio station: "If an allied country spies on France or spies on other European countries, that's totally unacceptable."
In July, Paris prosecutors opened a preliminary inquiries into the "NSA's programme":[ Ссылка ], known as Prism, after "Germany's Der Spiegel":[ Ссылка ] and Britain's The Guardian revealed wide-scale spying by the agency leaked by former contractor Edward Snowden.
