Despite its low opus number, this piece is actually a late work by the Swiss composer Joachim Raff (1822-82), written in 1875, and reusing an opus number first used for a different set of pieces written in 1842. This was the strange result of Raff returning to the publisher Breitkopf & Härtel after a long gap. The Romance is marked Adagio quasi andante, but that reflects the overall pace and mood of the piece - the crotchet metronome marking is actually 116, which looks strange at first sight. Note that this piece was on the 2012-2014 Trinity Guildhall Piano Grade 6 syllabus - an excellent choice!
