The footage shows crew members of the STS-27 mission playing with binoculars and a Swiss Army knife as they demonstrate the Dzhanibekov Effect on board the shuttle, but the mission itself was significant for much more than just this lighthearted moment. It was the first Space Shuttle mission launched after the Challenger disaster in 1986, with a crew consisting of Commander Robert Gibson, Pilot Guy Gardner, and Mission Specialists Richard Mullane, Jerry Ross, and Bill Shepherd, who deployed a classified Department of Defense satellite into orbit. The Dzhanibekov Effect, also known as the Tennis Racket Theorem, is a physics phenomenon that can affect the stability and control of rotating objects in space, causing a sudden, unpredictable flip or rotation when an object with three different principal axes of rotation rotates around its intermediate axis. During the mission, debris from the solid rocket boosters damaged the shuttle's thermal protection system. However, the crew survived reentry due to an aluminum mount used to attach an antenna to the shuttle, leading to a redesign of the boosters for subsequent missions and ensuring the safety of future crews.
