We were barely five minutes out with roads policing inspector Peter Woods when a driver was spotted on their phone and not wearing a seatbelt.
The Irish Independent was riding along with gardaí down the N7 on a fine Monday morning to get a look at a new approach to roads policing in Ireland – observing drivers on the motorway from the perch of an unmarked lorry.
From the high vantage point of the lorry cab, Insp Woods was aided by his colleague, Garda Des Griffin. In the passenger seat, he served as the observer and spotted the offending driver straight-away.
Gda Griffin then radioed Garda Robbie Griffin (no relation), who was trailing behind in an unmarked patrol car.
Without the lorry ever needing to stop, it had detected a distracted driver, a colleague was notified and a fixed-charge notice was handed out.
Just like that, the driver was hit with three penalty points and a mandatory fine of €120.
