In respect to the voluntary separation programme (VSP) it implemented last week to cut its headcount as part of its significant global layoff plan, the Union Labour Ministry delivered a notification to Amazon India on Tuesday. According to reports, Amazon India has informed the labour ministry that, "It has not sacked any employee and has only let go of those who accepted the severance package and opted for separation on their own". This was in response to a plea submitted to Bhupender Yadav, the minister of labour, by the Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES), an employee union based in Pune. It said that Amazon fired a significant number of workers in India under duress. Before the deputy labour commissioner of the Union labour ministry in Bengaluru, an Amazon representative gave a testimony. The hearing was not attended by a representative of Amazon India. According to Amazon India, the company conducts annual assessments of all of its staff to determine whether any realignment is necessary.
