Luxembourg is the capital of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, a small state between Western Europe and Central Europe and enclosed between Belgium to the west and north, Germany to the east and France to the south. It has 124 528 inhabitants as of 2021 (approximately 170,000 in the metropolitan area). The spur on which it was built is on three sides overlooking natural canals, so since the Middle Ages the city has been considered a fortress.
Hometown of one of the founding fathers of the European Union, Robert Schuman, Luxembourg is one of the three official headquarters of the EU and hosts its judicial and financial institutions: the Court of Justice of the European Union, the European Investment Bank, the European Court of Auditors, the General Secretariat of the European Parliament, the Publications Office as well as numerous services of the European Commission. Eurostat, the European statistics center, is also based in Luxembourg.
