Akiva Weingarten, Rabbi of the Jewish Synagogues of both Dresden, Germany and Basel, Switzerland, along with Michael Hurshell, leader of the Jewish community in Dresden, came today to Görlitz to better learn about the city and its Jewish connections/history.
At the Jewish cemetery, the gentlemen were met by Lauren Leiderman. The American, has lived in Görlitz with her family since last year. Together with Daniel Breutmann, the city council member who represents the South City Neighborhood, Lauren who is married to a Jewish man, organized a massive clean up of the Görltz Jewish Cemetery.
Lauren took particular care to clean up the graves of Max Hannes and Adolph Totschek- whose descendants now live in America and with whom Lauren maintains active contact.
Through her initiative, these graves have been not only cleaned but replanted, and Lauren has plans to continue this project with more graves in the future. Lauren and Daniel are also organizing the installation of a stolperstein for “Amanda Hannes” who was recently discovered to have been buried alongside her husband, Max.
The tour of the Jewish cemetery was also led by Evelin Mühle, who is the head of the Görlitz Municipal Cemeteries. She spoke to Rabbi Weingarten and Mr. Hurshell about the many important sights in the cemetery.
After the tour of the cemetery, the group departed for a tour of the Görlitz Synagogue, which is still under renovation and will be reopened as a cultural forum.
