Lanterns in New Taipei New Taipei City today released its official lantern for the upcoming Lantern Festival holiday on February 11, a plump rooster with a multi-colored tail in a handheld design. In celebration of the year of the rooster, the city is also offering a smaller baby chick model, which will be released on a limited basis of only 500 pieces.Tailflowers in KaohsiungWith the Lunar New Year right around the corner, Kaohsiung’s Neimen District is right in the middle of peak tailflower season, with many workers in the region busy picking and packing the brightly colored flowers to sell. Unlike many locally grown fruits and vegetables that went up in price after earlier bad weather, tailflowers this season are 10 to 20 percent cheaper than last year, thanks to a warmer winter.Snow on HehuanshanHehuanshan, one of the highest peaks in Central Taiwan, saw its first snowfall of the year, two or three days after the arrival of a moist cold front from China, with accumulation of over 10 centimeters. Yushan also saw snow in the early hours after temperatures there dipped to negative 4 degrees Celsius, but accumulation was less than one centimeter. The CWB expects temperatures to inch back up starting Tuesday.
