Analysis and commentary of the Château Léoube, 2012 Léoube Collector Cabernet Franc, Provence, France
I know what you're thinking. Provence? Cabernet Franc? No way Allison. It is going to be WAY to warm fro Cabernet Franc here. And yes, generally Provence is much too warm, but the terroir here at Léoube for this block of Cabernet Franc is very special.
The origins of the 100% Cabernet Franc bottling from Château Léoube was conceived in 2002 when 3ha of Cabernet Franc vines were planted alongside Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with the goal of making a Bordeaux-inspired wine. After 10 years of playing with the assemblage and élevage, it was concluded that 100% Cabernet Franc was the ideal expression from the Léoube terroirs. The first vintage of the Léoube Collector Cabernet Franc was 2011.
So, why does Cabernet Franc work here? Well, the grape's origins may hint to something. From what we know, Cabernet Franc originates from Basque Country in Spain - a rather southerly latitude, very close to the Atlantic Ocean. We know from other regions such as Bordeaux, Irouléguy, Bolgheri (Italy), that Cabernet Franc seems to adapt well to warmer microclimates with a strong maritime influence.
The block of Cabernet Franc at Léoube is 50m from the Mediterranean Sea, on a similar latitude to San Sebastien in Spain's Basque Country. The cooling influence of the sea, couple with the cooler, moisture-retentive clay soils, help to create an ideal environment for Cabernet Franc.
