"July marks the 20th anniversary of the americans with disabilities act and among the steps made ver the years a wheelchair designed for the beach, a story from Siesta Key and Jill Sobolesky.
Near the pavillon at Siesta Key Beach, Anne Olson sits in her wheelchair, normally with the help of her husband she would move into this beach wheelchair and get to experience the sand, but on a hot day like this Anne would like to get in the water; and today she will.
- I'm excited to gt back in the water, I know how the water makes you feel : more buoyant and light.
It's been 10 years since Anne and her husband Jeff have been able to enjoy the gulf as a couple. Anne was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis about 20 years ago but thanks to a new beach wheelchair, today anything is possible.
- To see Anne in the water today will be the reward that's all, that's necessary, it will be great !
As Jeff helps his wife into the chair he says it's much easier because you can elevate the arms but for Anne what's most important is just being together.
- People in wheelchairs tend to get left out of family and friend gatherings especially when it's at the beach.
Anne won't be left out today, Jeff stands behind his wife 100%, passion pushes him to be able to give his wife the quality of life he feels she deserves.
- I have personally been working to try to make the beaches in Florida more accessible through different means for seven years now.
- It gives me the strength to continue to enjoy life and it means a lot to me.
And the day is about to get a whole lot better. Now beach wheelchairs like this have only been around Sarasota County for about three weeks, this is the first time that Anne is about to tell us what it feels like to be in the water.
- I hope a lot of people take advantage of it, there's people all over the county that never been to the beach or never been in the water and now they have a chance to do both and I hope they can ake advantage of it !
The couple was kind enough to come out for a short interview, just long enough to tell us how it was.
- That was great ! Now that we got a beach wheelchair right here, in Sarasota County, we're going to be here pretty regularly.
- It's great being out here with all the people having fun on the beach.
- These type of devices, they get the people with disabilities, right up in the front row with everybody.
- It's going to make my whole summer !
And of course, the fun has just begun, the new beach wheelchair makes it possible to enjoy the beach for hours so, until it's time for a siesta Anne and Jeff were far from ready to kiss their day to the beach goodbye."
