I am joining nutrition groups across the country in a TwitterStorm on Tuesday, July 7 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm EST to urge a delay in the release of the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (DGAC) expert report.
Join us in this important effort to raise awareness and call for reform.
With just a few short weeks left until the release of the final expert report by the 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (DGAC), there is a growing chorus of concerns regarding the report’s narrow scope and flawed scientific process. Multiple groups, as well as a Member of Congress have urged a delay of this report, to ensure adequate time to review and address the concerns.
The Nutrition Coalition is concerned about numerous issues in the current process including:
The fact that the Dietary Guidelines only addresses healthy Americans, without any diagnosis of a chronic disease, despite the fact that this is a minority of our population and that the Guidelines are administered, via school lunch programs, feeding programs for the elderly, etc., to sick and well alike;
The exclusion, by the DGAC, of virtually all clinical trials on weight loss;
The exclusion of the last decade of science on saturated fats, which cumulatively show that these fats do not have an effect on cardiovascular or total mortality;
The exclusion of virtually all science on low-carbohydrate diets;
The continued use of a ‘black box’ methodology that is not transparent about how data is evaluated or graded;
The lack of transparency about major conflicts of interest on the DGAC.
We encourage you to join us in tweeting on July 7.
