A joint military exercise including Chinese, Cambodian, Lao, Malaysian, Thai and Vietnamese forces concluded on Wednesday in Zhanjiang, south China's Guangdong Province, further deepening mutual trust and pragmatic cooperation.
Code-named "Peace and Friendship-2023," or "Aman Youyi-2023," the 10-day joint military drills that started on Nov 13 saw the participation of a record-large number of countries and the largest scale of military forces to date.
All the participating countries are signatories to the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea. Among them, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia participated in the military exercise for the first time.
It focused on joint counterterrorism efforts and on safeguarding maritime security. It also explored new tactics in urban counterterrorism, maritime counterterrorism and anti-piracy operations, and joint air defense, and optimized related processes and mechanisms.
These drills are of significance in enhancing exchanges, cooperation and mutual trust among Chinese and the Asian countries' militaries.
Special forces of these countries were dispatched to participate in mixed training, where soldiers are divided into groups based on assigned tasks rather than nationalities to largely ensure effective cooperation.
An anti-piracy exercise at sea was held simultaneously with the land drills.
The guided-missile destroyer Nanning and the comprehensive supply ship Weishanhu that recently completed their escort mission in the Gulf of Aden formed a task group with the Selangor offshore patrol vessel of the Malaysian navy and the Quang Trung frigate of the Vietnamese navy.
