Machado de Assis weaves a colorful tapestry of the social climate of Brazil in the turn of the century over 100 years ago in Dom Casmurro. This book is a memoir of the life of Bento Santiago, later known as the titular Dom Casmurro. As a young fellow, he is destined for the seminary but in his adolescence he falls in love with Capitu, his next door neighbor. What ensues is a life full of romance, jealousy, and a decay of trust. De Assis captures the essence of the time wonderfully and writes with irony and dark humor in what is an amazing novel. Great book - 4.2 our of 5 stars!
