The Crossbow 2 radio controlled (RC) ornithopter was designed to fly with a conventional flapping mechanism. An electric motor with gear reduction turns a crank, which flaps the wings. But the modular design makes it possible to remove the gearbox and replace it with two powerful servos to flap the wings. The servos will give us more control over the wing motion, such as the ability to control the angle of the flapping. But, will the servos be able to match the performance of the conventional flapping mechanism?
