Learn to row properly. In this video, Olympian Luke Walton teaches us how to row with a proper legs and core dominant rowing technique. Coach Walton explains that although the arms are a part of the rowing stroke, and although many confuse rowing as an arms only sport, the arms do not feature prominently into to the drive phase of the stroke. Coach Walton also teaches us the legs, legs/body, legs/body/arm drill, so we row with great suspension between feet and handle on the drive, and don’t end up rowing like a Praying Mantis.
If you are new to rowing, or even if you aren’t, this video is a great explanation on why rowing is a leg/core dominant stroke, and why you should avoid overusing the arms.
