Beginner fly fishers often ask the question "what is a redd?" or "what does a redd look like?" This video shows what a redd looks like as well as how trout create them.
A “redd” is a spawning area for trout in a river or trout stream. It is a gravel nest that fish create in shallow areas of a river or stream to lay their eggs.
When fly fishing, it is important to avoid disturbing redds. Anglers should never step on them or cast to fish that are currently inhabiting the redd.
Fly fishers can identify a redd when they see a larger than-normal trout holding in shallow water. Large trout typically hold in deeper water or areas with more protection from predators. However a spawning trout, regardless of size, will hold in shallow water when spawning.
Trout use their bodies and tails to clear the river bed of debris, making their nest.
Anglers should avoid stepping on redds and/or casting to fish holding in a redd. Spawning trout are spending a ton of energy to lay, fertilize, and protect their nest. If we catch a trout during its spawning routine, it may cause too much stress for the fish for it to continue living.
