On A Slow Boat To China (Loesser) by Kay Kyser & his Orchestra, vocal by Harry Babbitt and Gloria Wood
Following up Kyser’s chart-topping “Woody Woodpecker” was this winning million-seller from the pen of Frank Loesser. You’ll note that it effectively utilized the same arrangement structure that had proved so successful for Jimmy Dorsey with his Bob & Helen hits of “Green Eyes” “Tangerine” and “Amapola.” It also turned out to be the final national hit for ‘The Ol’ Professor’ prior to his retirement from the band-leading grind. Kyser’s “Slow Boat” cruised right behind Dinah Shore’s “Buttons And Bows” for a seven-week run at #2 on the juke box charts. Eddy Howard, Freddy Martin and Benny Goodman also released top-10 versions of the song.
