Aphrodite of Knidos, made by the Greek sculptor Praxiteles (circa 400-326 BCE), is, along with the Zeus of Olympia by Phidias, the most famous statue of Greek and Roman Antiquity. It was and has been set up in Knidos, following the decision of the inhabitants to acquire it.
She is the second known depiction of complete female nudity in great Greek statuary.
The original is gone, but there are several hundred ancient versions.
In the Department of Greek, Etruscan and Roman Antiquities at the Louvre we find:
1. Head of Aphrodite of Knidos, Kaufmann Head. Discovered in Tralles, in Asia Minor (Turkey). Circa 150 BC Roman copy of the Imperial period, marble.
2. Head of the Aphrodite of Knidos, known as the “Borghese Head”. Roman copy from the Imperial period, marble.
3. Torso of the type of the Aphrodite of Knidos. Roman copy from the Imperial period, marble, 2nd century AD.
