How can a wheelchair bound person travel on a shuttle bus?
Shuttle buses come with and without wheelchair lift equipment. Thus owners who don't plan to ferry handicapped passengers can opt for the regular bus. Whereas those planning to transport wheelchair bound passengers by servicing churches. Senior centers, adult daycare's etc can choose to by the wheelchair lift equipped buses.
The wheelchair buses have a front door with regular steps for passenger entrance. And a door at the end on the same side which contains the wheelchair lift. These lifts are powerful and carry weights up to 800 lbs in and out of the vehicle at the press of a button. The driver or an attendant needs to open the lift door. And press the wheelchair control button on the dashboard. This will unfold the lift and deploy it at the ground level. Then the wheelchair passengers need to roll onto the lift. They should be facing the vehicle and stationed in a secure position. So that they don't lose their balance or skid off the lift as it elevates them inside the vehicle. The lift has two hand grips that make sure the disabled passenger holds them tight. It reduces the chances of falling off during transition.
Once the lift is inside the bus. The driver or the attendant can fold two full seats and tuck them to the side walls of the vehicle. This will make space for the wheelchair passenger. They are then fastened to the automatic wheelchair retractors. This makes sure the wheelchair stays in a stable position during transit. These retractors prevent wheelchairs from colliding with other passengers. They keep the seats and walls of the bus safe. During reflex traffic maneuvers or when applying emergency brakes. This ensures the safety of all passengers as well as keeps the interiors of the vehicle in good shape.
The entire process is then reversed when the passenger has to alight from the bus. Remember that the wheelchair bound person does not have to get out of his or her chair throughout the entire process. These buses lift them up along with their wheelchairs in and out of the vehicle. Thus making travel a pleasurable experience for handicapped people. Because of these buses wheelchair bound people can dare to step out of the four walls of their houses. They can travel with ease to the church. Even Shopping malls, meeting friends and indulging in other recreational activities.
In the absence of wheelchair buses the disabled person will have to buy a wheelchair van. Or abandon the idea of traveling. Because even if they manage to get inside a regular bus, they will have to leave their wheelchairs behind. This is a difficult situation to be in especially in new and distant locations. It is the Americans with Disability Act that has pushed manufacturers to design vehicles that are capable of transporting disable citizens. The Act prohibits discrimination against handicapped citizenry and provides equal opportunities in transportation, employment, communication, public accommodations and access to state and federal government services and programs.
The irony is that buses are big vehicles that cost thousands of dollars and wheelchair equipped ones cost even more than that because of the additional equipment. The price difference can be potentially between $5,000 to $8,000. Thus it is better to buy the used version of these shuttle buses because they are reasonably priced and cost half the price of the newer versions. In the used buses for sale industry there isn't much price difference between a wheelchair bus and a non-wheelchair equipped bus.
However these used buses need to be repaired before being put back on the road or else they can cause serious damage to public property, pedestrians and other road users. Thus its wise to purchase from dealerships who recondition every vehicle from bumper to bumper before selling them off to the next buyer. The new owner can then put them to use for church service or senior center service or general group transportation. These shuttle usually seat up to 15 passengers including the driver and dont need a commercial license for operations due to their compact size.
