The Terra Nova floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) facility faced two major challenges – during adverse weather, gas detection sensors were triggering false alarms, and the reservoir was beginning to produce toxic H2S. A multi-disciplinary team in Canada, Norway, the UK and the US implemented new technology to improve safety, reduce maintenance requirements, and increase production by 50,000–100,000 bbl/y, eliminating downtime from false alarms.
