This is instructions on how to refill the PG–540 Black Colour Cartridge on a Canon PIXMA printer. This is done by using an off-the-shelf refill kit which you can buy for around £10-£15. Your cartridge will still register as empty as Canon do not allow you to reset it, but you can carry on using the printer by pressing down on the red upside down triangle button on the printer, if it tells you that it is empty.
Before you begin, make sure you have plenty of kitchen towel to mop up any ink spills, and be very careful not to damage any of the electronic components on the cartridge or the nozzle.
1. Begin my removing the sticker/label on top of the cartridge.
2. You now need a small hand drill bit that is provided in your refill kit, and start to gently drill a hole roughly in the centre of the cartridge. This can take some time, so be patient.
3. Next you want to fill the syringe with the black refill ink. Start with a small amount as you can always refill the syringe.
4. Gently insert the syringe into the hole you made, and gradually start filling the cartridge at a slow pace.
5. Keep on filling the cartridge until it gently starts to bubble out of the hole.
6. With your refill kit, you should get set of little rubber plugs. Insert one of these into the hole you made.
7. Clean away any ink and reinsert your cartridge back into your Canon printer.
8. Once you have reinserted your cartridge, you want to open up your printers menu via the Canon software. If you haven't got the software installed on your PC, you can download it from their website by just typing in your make and model.
9. You want to perform deep cleaning which will help to clean the cartridge nozzle.
10. After this has finished perform a test print to see if your printer is printing correctly. Please note your cartridge will still register as empty because Canon will not allow you to reset it, however, simply press the reset button which is shaped like an upsidedown red triangle carry on printing.
