MIDDLETOWN, Ohio (WKRC) - A gas leak and fire led to an evacuation of homes in Middletown. The all-clear was given about two hours later.
The gas leak and fire were reported at about 9:45 a.m. Wednesday morning.
Firefighters evacuated homes on Lafayette Avenue in the area of Verity Parkway.
Duke Energy was called in to turn off the gas in the area.
Sally Thelen with Duke Energy said crews had to dig to get to a point on the service line where they could stop the gas flow. They were able to shut off the gas at about 11:30 a.m.
Lafayette remained closed to traffic but people were allowed to return to their homes.
Thelen said a contractor working on curbs in the area struck the line.
