“If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.”
This proverb means that you shouldn’t give up if your initial attempt doesn’t work out as hoped.
In other words, if you fail in the beginning, you should get up and give it another go. If you still don’t make it, do it again!
People often want to do something or learn something, but life’s not always easy and you’ll often find yourself failing on the first attempt or perhaps even first dozen attempts.
However, after trying and not succeeding many times, you’ll probably find that you have eventually made it, have finally triumphed.
After giving it many shots, even if you haven’t achieved complete success, you are surely halfway there, have made a lot of progress, or have learned a lot.
A good example of this is trying to find your first job after graduation from college or university.
Oftentimes, you’ll graduate from school and eagerly apply for dozens and dozens of positions, excited at the prospect of getting your first taste of “the real world”.
After months of applying and not getting even one job offer - despite perhaps many interviews, or very few interviews - you are much less optimistic about your prospects.
Perhaps you even lose confidence in yourself; you may start to question your own self-worth, your abilities, your talent, your willingness to put yourself out there.
Rejection and failure are both horrible feelings and it doesn’t make things better when you hear that many of your friends have already landed their dream jobs.
It is at this time that you must remember the proverb, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.”
You see, the only way to get what you want is to get up and give it another go. The only way to solve your situation is to strive and to struggle until what you seek is seized.
Whatever you want to do, keep trying and don’t ever give up! Maybe you need to try different methods, or ask for help, or get some advice.
Perhaps you need to take a break and approach your problem refreshed, or try to look at it from a different angle, from a different perspective. “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.”
This poignant proverb originates in the early 1800s, first found in writing in American educator, Thomas H. Palmer’s “Teacher’s Manual” and popularized by British educational writer, W. E. Hickson.
The original proverb was, “‘Tis a lesson you should heed: Try, try, try again. If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, try again.”
It is up to you, then, to decide that you will try, try, try again! After all, the only path to success is the path forward. Giving up won’t get you what you want.
So, the next time you are struggling with something or your prospects seem dim, remind yourself, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.”
