Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched three flagship schemes for urban rejuvenation. The three projects are Smart Cities Mission, Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) and Housing For All. The schemes will be an important milestone for urban development.
Launching the schemes in New Delhi this morning, Mr Modi said every person dreams of having his or her own home and the government is committed to fulfill that dream. He said Housing for All is not merely about a roof and four walls, it is beyond that.
Stating that the Government is committed to safeguarding the rights of the consumers at all times, the Prime Minister said, the decision to make cities smart will be taken not by Governments but by the people of the city and the local administration. Mr Modi said, private property developers should not decide how a city should grow and it should be left to residents and city leadership. The Prime Minister said government will bring more Foreign Direct Investment into urban infrastructure sector.

The Prime Minister lamented that there is a lack of holistic vision about urban planning and said expansion is driven not by the administrators of a city, but by property developers. Mr Modi asserted that his government is sensitive to consumer protection. He said a poor person invests all his savings for a house, but when he is cheated, he loses everything.
