This is the second part of the treatment mission to save the life of a badly injured tusker found collapsed near a village border. Initially the officers gave him a saline treatment and antibiotics, energy boosters and pain killers were also administered in to elephant’s body using the IV line. But at the end of the first day’s treatment, there wasn’t a noticeable progress in elephant’s recovery. The vet team visited again in the next day to treat the elephant again.
When the team visited for the next day, elephant seemed to have regained some energy. Now he is eagerly eating the foods given by the villagers. It is a positive sign to keep hope about the elephant’s recovery. Thorny trees and bushes that disturb the operation was cleared away using a backhoe.
Same routine was followed again, because the elephant has to be boosted up anyhow. Otherwise he will die lacking the last bit of energy remaining in the body. Saline treatment was resumed again. The veterinary surgeon thoroughly cleaned the ear area of the elephant to connect the IV line to administer saline. Cannula is placed here as the veins are clearly visible in the ear area. Multiple bottles of saline were given simultaneously.
The elephant has been injured with gun shooting. The resulting injuries were packed with antiseptic medicines. The officers feed the elephant with great care and sympathy. Meanwhile the veterinary surgeon added some antibiotics to the IV line. The elephant is weakened with infection in the wounds. Antibiotics are helpful to boost the immunity to heal the infection and expedite the wound healing process. Multivitamins and anti-inflammatory medicines were added to the saline.
Elephant slightly moved its body showing the signs of regaining the energy.
Now they are attempting to make the elephant stand. They patted the elephant to give a stimuli to regain the consciousness of the elephant. Strong rope lope was used to lift the elephant. Others push the elephant to provide external support make the elephant in to an upright posture. The elephant couldn’t stand on its feet at once. Because he was severely weakened and still gaining the strength from the saline administered in to the body. But they didn’t give up. It took about 5 hours to make the elephant stand. It was at night when the operation finished.
The wildlife officials were exhausted at the end of the day. But they were really happy and contented. They felt that they could achieve something special at the end of the day. The elephant moved to the forest border. But the team could provide antibiotic treatment routinely as the elephant didn’t moved deeper in to the forest. The infected wounds were completely healed after about 14 days. The tusker was seen rejoined with its herd after gaining a complete recovery.
