First game of the season at Attis Arena/Glanford Park. Marine AFC the visitors. They beat Macclesfield last season in the play offs, to win promotion 👏🏼👏🏼 I know that Macclesfield would have been favourites. So was a nice surprise to see Marine beat them 2-1, after the league fixtures Macc had won both of them 2-1.
A fitting tribute to John Staff too. Both sets of fans joining in the minutes applause which was good to see 👏🏼👏🏼 Gone but never forgotten.
So first half I thought was fairly even, nothing to write home about as such. Though Scunthorpe getting the breakthrough just before half time. Boyce rising highest, to direct a Nicholson long throw in to the corner. I think Marine would have felt hard done to too by that. They were in the game and looking to get forward. I was worried they’d sit back. They were let down in the final third, definitely missing Bobby Grant.
Second half, Scunthorpe definitely had the better of it. I think in the end fitness levels told. Marine had done a lot of running in the first half, which was now telling. Two late goals from Whitehall and Fishburn sealed the victory. DRE found its voice too, which always helps. Marine fans in the first half were loud and a credit to the club. I know they’ve lost 3-0, but I can’t see them going down. Once they get key players back I think they’ll have an upturn in fortunes.
Next up for us Needham Market on Tuesday. Bit of a trek to deepest Suffolk. Hopefully we can carry on with another victory. Anyway I’m now off to listen to De La Soul - The Magic Number.
