It's kind of like when little kids play soccer They're not attached to where they kick the ball They just keep kicking the ball in a state of play Startup ideas are a little bit like that You're just tinkering with technologies of the future without an attachment to where it's going to necessarily go And it's your ability to notice the surprises and double down on the things that are working right You escalate your commitment as you increase your certainty But you want to start out with as minimum commitment as possible and exploring interesting things for its own sake And you want to have the right people engaged in that exploration right So exploring is really different from exploiting And you're trying to explore in ways that are not too visible at first and aren't too risky at first and that don't become a career limiting move for somebody if they don't turn into something right away
