Actor Russell Crowe had been offered the role of Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings by Peter Jackson, which would have seen the actor make 100 million dollars in a back-end gross deal. Crowe however turned down the role, believing that he wasn’t the director's first choice. Daniel Day-Lewis was reportedly offered the role but turned it down and both Vin Diesel and Nicholas Cage auditioned for the role. Jackson then offered Viggo Mortonsen for the role and was only given a few hours to decide to take on the role.
