United Nations, New York, 4 February 2010 - The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) said today that according to preliminary estimates, up to 20 million cubic yards of rubble needs to be removed from Port-au-Prince.
Speaking to reporters at headquarters in New York, the director for UNDPs bureau for crisis prevention and recovery Jordan Ryan said that only after the removal of the rubble which is part of the UNDPs Cash-for-Work programme, will Haitians move to the rehabilitation of essential social infrastructure, such as street repairs and electricity.
He said that those types of activities in an early recovery programme can reduce social tension, adding it would also provide an opportunity for people to learn new skills that would come from these programmes.
