This is a video of the 1979 Morgan State University Varsity Lacrosse team. It was a rebuilding year filled with much effort and many hopes , but not many successes. But the seeds planted in 1979 and cultivated in 1980 resulted in the 1981 team being ranked #3 in Division II. To that extent, good teams are like photographs - they just need time to develop.
The 10 Bears hold the distinction of being the first varsity lacrosse team at a historically black college or university (HBCU). In early 2015, Hampton University became the second HBCU to hold this distinction; the first coach of the HU varsity program is Lloyd Carter - a member of the 10 Bears.
Several of the MSU players went on to coach youth and high school lacrosse in Baltimore City. Though now well into their 50s and 60s, these men still try to stay in touch and invest in the total welfare of young men; they want to see the next generations succeed on the field, in the classroom and in their communities. Programs such as Blax Lax (currently coordinated by 10 Bear Anthony Ryan) are instructing young men in the principles of the sport and how to become principled young men.
