Science for a Sustainable Future is a joint initiative of the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (UN SDSN) and Springer Nature. Now in its fourth year, the event brings together policymakers, government representatives, UN officials and leading global scientists to discuss and advance the objectives of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In April 2023, we hosted three one hour webinars over a period of three weeks, coinciding with Earth Month, on the subject of SDG 7: Clean and Affordable Energy.
Billions of people, especially in the global South, rely on biomass and wood to cook. This has significant effects on indoor air quality, impacting people’s health and women and girls in particular. It can also entrench gender roles and impede women’s economic empowerment. Introduction of cleaner energy solutions can improve health outcomes for all and greater gender balance. We need to consider context appropriate solutions and practices, but how can we also channel research findings into policy actions that change these practices? This session looked into the intersection between energy provision, energy access and social justice, from the perspective of Indigenous communities and those in the Global South, and focused on household behaviours, technology deployment, costs, and policy support.
