Tax scams don't just happen at tax time. Three common tax scams are identity theft, phishing and return preparer fraud.
Identity Theft: Identity thieves use personal information, such as your name and social security number and other information to commit fraud. An identity thief can use your identity to file a fraudulent tax return and claim your refund. Make sure you shred important documents and make sure you computer has anit-virus software.
Phishing: Phishing is used to trick victims into revealing personal and financial information. They may pose as the IRS on the phone or in emails, or even build phony websites to get your information. Once they have your information they can get access to your bank and credit card accounts, and even apply for loans.
Return Preparer Fraud: While most tax professionals are accurate and honest when preparing tax returns for their clients, some skim a portion of their clients' refunds or charge hugely inflated fees for tax preparation. Some also promise refunds that are much to good to be true to attract clients.
