SMZB is an acronym for "ShengMing Zhi Bing"(生命之饼) (literally, "Bread of Life"). Established in 1996, they are a Wuhan based punk band and one of the first punk bands in mainland China. Unlike their fellow established peers, SMZB songwriter and founder, Wu Wei, has opted to remain in his hometown and nurture his local scene, and is one of the original forces in establishing any kind of rock scene in Wuhan. Through his independent entertainment brand, WUHAN PRISON, he remains the only established punk veteran who actively helps smaller punk bands located far outside of the Beijing bubble. WUHAN PRISON records aid in the production and distribution of albums by unsigned punk bands throughout China, as well as organizing the annual WUHAN PRISON PUNKFEST, which is the only festival in China to specialize in showcasing punk rock from all over China (versus the Beijing Punk Fest, which is mostly Beijing-centric and tends to focus on established bands of note).
This is video of their 15th anniversary show @ VOX Livehouse, in Wuhan, to a capacity crowd, on Christmas of 2011.
SMZB's current lineup is: Wu Wei - lead vocals and guitar, Xu Bei - lead guitar and vocals, Ma Jiliang - bass and vocals (formerly of BRAIN FAILURE), Pigu - drums (also drummer with Changsha hardcore band THE LAST CHOICE) , Tang Leicheng - fife, whistle and bagpipes, and Melissa - violin. * Former guitarist (and current SMZB manager) Zhang Mohan makes a guest performance on a pair of songs during this particular show.
