The monetary unit of the Republic of Uganda is the shilling which consists of 100 cents. In monetary circulation there are coins of 50, 100, 200 and 500 shillings.
In 1966 in Uganda in turn introduced coins in denominations of 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents and 1 and 2 shillings. Coins of 5, 10 and 20 cents were made of bronze and the higher denominations of copper-Nickel alloy. In 1972, coins were issued 5 shillings copper-Nickel alloy, but was soon withdrawn from circulation and is now very rare. In 1976, the bronze coins of 5 and 10 cents were replaced with copper-plated steel, and in coins of 50 cents and 1 shilling steel plated with copper-Nickel alloy has replaced the copper-Nickel alloy. In 1986, coins were issued 50 cents and 1 shilling Nickel-plated steel.
In 1987, were introduced in circulation coins 1 and 2 shillings of steel plated with copper-Nickel alloy and heptagonal coins of 5 and 10 shillings of stainless steel. In 1998 was released a new series of coins of 50, 100, 200 and 500 shillings.
The reverses of all Ugandan coins are decorated with images of any animals living on the territory of the state. In particular, on the coin of 50 shillings a head antelope, 100 shillings — oxen, 200 fish, 500 — East African crowned crane.
