Usman Dan Fodio was a Fulani scholar who launched a religious Holy War (jihad) in northern Nigeria in 1804 that lasted for six years, The reason of the Jihad was to revive and purify Islam, This Holy was the beginning of unification of Hausa states under Islamic law, and led to the establishment of an empire called the Sokoto Caliphate in 1812.
