If you live in Sydney, these birds are your neighbours! The Australian white ibis (Threskiornis molucca) is a wading bird of the Ibis family, and it is widespread across Australia.
In the 1970s, the bird somehow migrated from its normal habitat of marshes and estuaries into urban Sydney. Like seagulls and pigeons, the ibis found abundant sources of food in the trash and roosting places in the numerous parks and reserves around the city. It is now ubiquitous -- and has earned the jokey nickname of "bin chicken" or sometimes "trash turkey."
