On December 20, 2024, San Francisco police officers fatally shot 50-year-old Peter Francis Hodge Jr., a security guard at the Dior store in Union Square, following a series of violent incidents.
Earlier that evening, around 6:30 p.m., Hodge was involved in a hit-and-run near Union Square. Surveillance footage shows Hodge's black SUV mounting the sidewalk at Kearny and Post streets, striking two young women, aged 17 and 18, who were exiting a Chipotle restaurant. Both sustained injuries, with one reporting her foot was run over. Hodge then pursued and collided with a cyclist on an e-bike, causing the rider to be thrown from the bike. After the collision, Hodge attempted to load the e-bike into his SUV but was unsuccessful; he did, however, take a bag attached to the bike before fleeing the scene.
Approximately seven hours later, around 1:30 a.m. on December 20, officers located Hodge near the Dior store on Grant Avenue. Body-worn camera footage released by the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) shows officers attempting to detain Hodge, issuing commands for him to raise his hands and turn around. Hodge initially raised his hands but did not turn around, questioning the officers' commands and beginning to walk away. Officers deployed non-lethal measures, including a BolaWrap restraint device and a bean-bag gun, both of which failed to subdue him. Hodge then reached toward his waistband, drew a handgun, and pointed it at the officers. In response, six officers discharged their firearms, striking Hodge. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
