A routine subway ride turned into a nightmare on December 22, when a 33-year-old undocumented migrant allegedly set a sleeping woman on fire, killing her in what authorities have called a “brutal and senseless act of violence. Sebastian Zapeta-Calil, from Guatemala, was arraigned on December 24 on charges of first- and second-degree murder and arson in connection with the death of a woman he allegedly set on fire while she slept aboard a New York City subway train. The attack occurred around 7:30 a.m. aboard an F train at the Stillwell Avenue station in Brooklyn. Sebastian allegedly set fire to the victim’s clothing and fanned the flames with a shirt, causing her to be engulfed in flames. He then exited the train and watched from a bench as the fire consumed her. The woman, who has not been identified, was believed to be homeless and had mobility issues, as indicated by a walker found near the scene. She was dressed in multiple layers of clothing, which likely accelerated the spread of the flames. She appeared unresponsive throughout the attack. Initially, investigators thought the fire was accidental due to liquor bottles found near the scene. However, surveillance footage captured Sebastian setting the fire. He was apprehended about eight hours after the attack when three high school students recognized him from released surveillance footage. Police stopped a train at Herald Square in Manhattan and found him with the lighter in his pocket. in 2018 Sebastian deported back to Guatemala and he returned to the us illegally sometime after. He had been staying at a homeless shelter individuals with substance abuse issues. According to prosecutors, Sebastian admitted to drinking heavily and claims he does not remember the incident.
