Higher-order aberrations can cause serious visual degradation, including starbursts, halos, and double-vision. Many assume these aberrations are caused by the anterior surface of the cornea, but the truth is much more complex: they are the combined result of every ocular surface and inter-layer misalignment, in the eye.
As the shape of each layer changes, the wavefront profile - and corresponding optical axis - changes with it. This means it’s critical to take every layer’s effect into account when correcting for higher-order aberrations. Otherwise, it can make the vision even worse than before.
