Ein Buch mit 500 Seiten Recycling Papier verursacht gut 2 Kilo CO2. Alle 10 Bücher von “Das Lied von Eis und Feuer” haben zusammen fast 7.000 Seiten und verursachen deswegen knapp 30 Kilo CO2. Das liegt vor allem daran, weil die Papierherstellung extrem viel Energie verbraucht. Liest man dieselben Bücher als E-Book spart man natürlich ‘ne Menge Papier.
Allerdings verursacht Datentransfer auch CO2 Emissionen (1 GB = 3 kg CO2e). Die Dateien werden von Servern über Router oder Mobilfunkmasten zu deinem E-Book Reader geschickt. Selbst wenn Anbieter wie Amazon, Google oder Apple Ökostrom nutzen und du zuhause auch: Viele der Geräte dazwischen werden noch nicht damit betrieben.
Alle E-Books von Game of Thrones zusammen haben aber gerade mal 93 MB. Das entspricht 0,28 kg CO2e.
Selbst wenn du dazu noch die Emissionen eines neuen E-Book-Readers (ca. 24 kg CO2e) drauf rechnest, bleibst du unter der Bilanz der Bücher.
Wer mehr als 10 Bücher im Jahr liest, spart also mit einem E-Book Reader CO2. Für alle, die nicht ohne Papier können: Verleiht eure Bücher. Das reduziert deren Fußabdruck. Oder geht in die Bibliothek.
