Equality vs. Equity in Education: Equity and equality are often used interchangeably, but they have different meanings.
Equality refers to the state of being equal, where everyone is treated the same, regardless of their differences. It assumes that everyone has the same starting point and that the same treatment will lead to equal outcomes.
Equity, on the other hand, refers to the state of being fair and just, where individuals are given what they need to be successful, based on their individual differences and circumstances. It recognizes that everyone has different starting points and may need different levels of support to achieve the same outcome.
In essence, equality means treating everyone the same, while equity means treating people fairly, taking into account their unique needs and circumstances.
In this video, we explore the difference between equity and equality and why it matters.
