The first Lecture in an online series considering Pytheas, the first Greek sailor to explore the Atlantic coast of Europe beyond the Mediterranean Sea (325 BC). He discovered and mapped northern Europe in search of tin for manufacturing bronze armour, valuable amber and gold.

Pytheas wrote an account of his voyage called ‘On the Ocean’ - the earliest historical study of the north Europeans.
