Boston Debut

Pedrito Martinez, a native of Cuba now based in New York, has established himself among the musical elite, playing with Paquito D'Rivera, Joe Lovano and Sting and touring with the high-energy Afrobeat group Yerba Buena. As the leader of his own band, Martinez draws heavily on the Afro-Cuban tradition of rumba and guaguancó. He's joined by Jhair Sala on percussion, Alvaro Benavides on electric bass and Ariacne Trujillo on keyboards and vocals. The New York Times describes the music as "complex, blenderized Africa--to--the--New World funk—he's an incomparable performer."
