Dr. Colleen Delaney's team at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center takes a cup of blood from a donated umbilical cord and over a fourteen day period expands the stem cells in that unit four-fold—to about 1.2 billion stem cells! These cells are then frozen and shipped across the country to help patients undergoing various cancer treatment therapies.
This video series, produced by Pacific Science Center, shows how the scientists and researchers expand the stem cell count of a cord blood unit. This video series was developed as part of a new exhibit at the Pacific Science Center: Building a New You, Harnessing the Power of Stem Cells.
Visit the Pacific Science Center to learn more about stem cells and current science research in Seattle. The exhibit is open from June 2014 until December 2014.
