The coronavirus pandemic has Mexico City's historic Café El Popular struggling to stay in business. The restaurant in downtown Mexico City has survived fires, earthquakes, H1N1, and currency devaluations in its 70+ year history.
“There must be 2,000 or 3,000 restaurants in downtown but El Popular because it’s a restaurant where they sell simple food like chilaquiles, milanesa, enchiladas, eggs, coffee with milk and sweet bread,” says owner Jose Luis Eng Mascarenas.
“I had never been in this situation of walking on a thin line between bankruptcy and working,” he says.
Café El Popular never closed during the coronavirus pandemic and is currently open for dine-in at about 20% capacity.
